What We Do

The tagline 'Mavericks who make heads nod and jaws drop' is the core of the identity of Rucksack Records. We work with forward-thinking hip-hop artists and jazz musicians who constantly push themselves—and their listeners—to break new ground. The artist-centric approach of the label enables the artists to make the music they want to make. All artists remain full ownership over their masters, and have the final say throughout the entire creative process. All the while Rucksack Records supports the artists to make dream projects and ambitious releases come to fruition.

Roots in Music Journalism

Rucksack Records is a spiritual successor to The Find Magazine. Both were founded by Danny Veekens, an Amsterdam-based music journalist (Bandcamp, Tracklib, Wax Poetics, We Jazz Magazine & more) and music curator (kollekt.fm & Sonos Radio). This editorial mindset is also at the core of the record label with liner notes by a who's who of acclaimed writers. Among them are Brian Michael Murphy (media archaeologist, essayist, and author), John-Paul Shiver (of San Francisco's 48 Hills), Nate Patrin (author of 'Bring That Beat Back: How Sampling Built Hip-Hop'), music journalist John Morrison (of NPR, The Wire Magazine & WXPN), and Nate LeBlanc (of the DadBodRapPod podcast).
